F.A.Q.: Anti-Virus Software

As previously announced by OIT, there will be a change in our anti-virus software effective July 1st. This is a reminder that all McAfee products must be uninstalled by July 1st. Our new contract is with Trend Micro for OfficeScan. This new software package has some additional features, the most useful being protection against spyware/adware.

UPDATING OFFICE COMPUTERS
We have created a package that will automatically install the new software after removing the old. I will set this up to run in the next few days. You will see a prompt that notifies you of the update and asks you if it is ok to proceed. Please answer yes when prompted. If you do not update, after July 1st you will no longer receive McAfee updates and your system will be vulnerable to infection.

After choosing yes, some files will be copied to your system and the install will proceed. Please do not attempt to use your computer while the installer is running. When the installation is complete a message will be displayed in the black box that appeared at the start of the install. After five seconds that box will disappear and the installation will be complete. You should no longer see the McAfee icon in your taskbar and the TrendMicro icons should now be visible.

UPDATING HOME COMPUTERS
Rutgers provides anti-virus software free of charge to any Rutgers University faculty, staff, or student. RADS can be used from both on campus and/or PCs connected at homes through Internet Service Providers (ISPs) other than Rutgers. You do not have to be connected to the Rutgers network to use RADS. You simply need an Internet connection such as DSL, a cable modem, or even a regular dialup modem.

Access the following web link from your home computer: https://software.rutgers.edu/search/?keyword=RADS.

You will be presented with a login page. Use your NetID (RCI/EDEN/RIAS ID) to login to this page. Once you've successfully logged in you will see the RADS (Rutgers Antivirus Delivery Service) 4.0.0 listed. Click on the title and more details will be displayed. Scroll down a bit and you'll see a list of files that can be downloaded. If you already have McAfee virus scanning on your system and you want to replace it with the new package click on the first link: RADSSetupXP.exe.

If you have no virus scanning software on your home system and would like to install the new package use the second link: RADSSetupXP.msi.

If you are using Internet Explorer, you can click on the file and choose Run. The software will be downloaded and installed.

If you are using Netscape/Firefox browsers you will have to save the file somewhere on your system and then run it for the install to proceed.

After the update has completed, you should see the new virus scanning icons in your taskbar (next to the clock).
